Colosseum Underground Tickets: What They Cost and Whether You Can Get One

Last reviewed September 2026

Colosseum underground tickets are sold by the Parco archeologico del Colosseo itself, at €24, under the name Full Experience – Underground levels and Arena. They are also, in practice, sold out: when we counted the shop's own calendar on 5 September 2026, its 28-day selling window held 464 timed slots, 10,150 places and one that was still free. What that scarcity does to prices runs through every Colosseum underground ticket and tour compared here.

Every Colosseum ticket is timed; the underground ones are timed and, almost always, gone.
Quick answer The price, the release window, and the one place still free

The ticket you want is Full Experience – Underground levels and Arena, €24 plus a reservation fee, sold only on ticketing.colosseo.it. It admits you to the hypogeum at a booked time — arrive 30 minutes early, the Park makes that mandatory — plus the arena floor, the Colosseum, the Roman Forum-Palatine area and the SUPER sites. It is not a guided ticket. The catch is supply: 17 slots a day of 25 people, released about 28 days ahead, and taken almost immediately. A tour with its own operator quota is how most visitors get down there.

What the Calendar Actually Showed

We did not ask an operator or read a blog. We counted the Park's own calendar, slot by slot, and kept the raw data with this site.

The count

On 5 September 2026 the Full Experience – Underground and Arena ticket was selling dates from 7 September to 5 October — 28 days. Across those dates the shop listed 464 timed slots with an original capacity of 25 each: 10,150 places. The number still available was one.

For comparison, on the same day the €18 24h ticket listed 39 slots a day and 4,485 places a day, and had 4,648 free — every one of them inside the next five days.

Why it is structural

The hypogeum is walked on a 160-metre raised walkway through a live excavation, in escorted groups of 25. That physical limit puts the underground at under a tenth of the monument's daily admissions — 425 places against 4,485 — no matter how many people want in. Refreshing does not create capacity that the route does not have.

The one thing that does change is the far end of the window: new dates appear daily, roughly 28 days out. If you are set on doing this yourself, that is the moment to be at the keyboard.

The dates that sell nothing

The first Sunday of the month is a free-admission day at the Colosseum, and the underground ticket is not on sale for it at all — 4 October 2026 is simply missing from the calendar. On those Sundays the only way below the arena is an operator's quota, and the monument above is at its most crowded.

How to Buy It, If a Slot Exists

The steps

Go to ticketing.colosseo.it, choose Individuals, then Full Experience – Underground levels and Arena. Pick the number of participants, then a date; available dates are the only ones the calendar will let you select. Every visitor needs their own reserved ticket regardless of the fare — full, reduced or free.

Enter names exactly as they appear on the documents you will carry. The ticket is personal and identity is checked at the entrance.

  • Buy only on ticketing.colosseo.it — the Park warns publicly about resale at inflated prices
  • Every visitor needs a reserved ticket, including free and reduced categories
  • Names must match the documents you bring
  • Arrive 30 minutes before the printed underground time

If the name is wrong

You can change it only until midnight on the seventh day before the visit, and only for a clerical error in the name, a wrong ticket type assigned inside the same transaction, or a documented serious reason preventing the visit. There is a dedicated form. Outside those cases the ticket stays as issued.

What the €24 does not buy

A guide. The Park sells guided tours separately, and the underground on this ticket is walked with an escort rather than a commentary. If you want the tunnels explained — and they reward explanation more than almost anything else in Rome — you are looking at a guided tour anyway, which also solves the availability problem.

The Realistic Alternatives

An operator's quota

Licensed operators hold their own allocation, which is why a tour can offer a hypogeum date the public shop has not had for weeks. You pay for the guiding and the quota; the €24 ticket is inside the price. Group size is what separates the listings — seven and six people at the small end, unpublished at the large end.

The tours below are the ones whose own inclusion lists name the underground.

The arena floor instead

The €18 24H Only Arena ticket puts you on the reconstructed deck for 20 minutes, looking down into the hypogeum from the rim. It is not the tunnels, but it is the same machine seen from above, at a fifth of the cost of the cheapest guided underground booking. The arena-floor page explains what you see.

The attic, if the underground is gone

The third Full Experience variant, also €24, adds the attic — the highest tier, with the view down the axis of the arena and out over the Forum. It is far easier to get than the underground and is the better fallback for a traveller who wants restricted access rather than the tunnels specifically.

Tours With Underground Quota

Every price, rating and review count is the operator's own figure, read on 5 September 2026. These are the listings whose inclusion lists name the hypogeum rather than the arena floor.

Rome: Colosseum Arena Floor or Underground Tour

★★★★★ ★★★★★ 4.8(335 reviews)· 1.5 hours

Two options under one listing, and the operator spells out the difference rather than blurring it: the Arena Floor option does not include the underground, the Underground option adds the hypogeum tunnels and caps the group at seven. Ninety-six percent of English-speaking travellers rated it five stars.

Colosseum Underground Ticket Questions

How much is a Colosseum underground ticket?

€24 from the Park's own shop, plus a reservation fee valued at €2.44 on one operator's listing. Guided tours that include the hypogeum start well above that, because they also carry the guide and the operator's quota.

Why can I never find an available date?

Because there are 425 places a day and the window is 28 days. On the window we counted, one place in 10,150 was free. New dates appear daily at the far end — that is the only moment self-service works.

Do I need a guide for the Colosseum underground?

No. The €24 ticket is self-guided with an escort; the Park sells guided tours as a separate product. Most visitors end up on a tour because of availability, not because a guide is required.

Does the Roma Pass or Parco Membership cover it?

Parco Membership explicitly excludes the underground and the attic. The underground is only inside the Full Experience – Underground and Arena ticket.

How early do I have to arrive?

Thirty minutes before the time printed on the ticket. The Park states this as mandatory, not advisory, and the group of 25 leaves without latecomers.

If the Park's calendar is empty for your dates, the operator quotas are the way down. Check which tours still have the underground option.
