Colosseum opening hours are only half the answer, because the Colosseum does not admit people by opening hours — it admits them by timed slot. The monument opens at 08:30 and closes on a seasonal timetable, but what decides your day is which of the day's slots you hold, and whether it is one of the seventeen that go underground. The Colosseum opens at 08:30 every day and closes on a seasonal timetable, with last admission an hour before closing. Inside that, entry is by timed slot: on the days we counted, the standard ticket sold 39 slots a day from 08:30 to 18:00, dropping to 36 slots ending at 17:15 from 30 September. The underground runs its own, much shorter timetable — 17 slots, 08:45 to 17:20, and 14 slots ending at 16:40 from 1 October. Closed 1 January and 25 December.

The Slot Lists, Not the Opening Times
Two different timetables run inside the same building, and confusing them is how people lose an underground booking.
The standard ticket
On the days on sale when we counted, the 24h Colosseum ticket offered 39 timed entries a day, the first at 08:30 and the last at 18:00, with a standard daily capacity of 4,485 places. From 30 September the day shortened to 36 slots ending at 17:15.
Slots are roughly every fifteen minutes across the middle of the day. The time on your ticket is an entry window, not a tour start — once inside, you stay as long as you like until closing.
The underground timetable
The hypogeum runs on its own, far tighter schedule: seventeen entries a day in September, fourteen from October, in groups of 25 with an escort.

The thirty-minute rule
The underground ticket carries a condition the standard one does not: mandatory arrival thirty minutes before the visit time. That window covers security screening and the assembly of your group of twenty-five. There is no later group with a spare place — every later slot is sold.
Seasonal Hours and the Days It Shuts
How the year is shaped
The opening time does not move: 08:30, every day the monument is open. The closing time steps back through autumn and forward again through spring, with last admission always an hour earlier.

Closed days and free days
The monument closes on 1 January and 25 December. The first Sunday of each month is free — and on those Sundays the underground ticket is not sold at all: 4 October 2026 is missing from the sales calendar entirely. Free Sundays also bring the year's heaviest crowds, with no way to book a timed slot in advance.

Which Slot to Book
Early, or late
The first two slots of the day and the last three are the calm ones. Early gives you cooler stone, a shorter security queue and low light across the tiers; late gives you the same in reverse, with the arches picking up the interior lamps as the sky goes.
Midday in summer is the slot to avoid if you have a choice. The monument has almost no shade and the arcades hold heat; the hypogeum, contrary to expectation, is humid rather than cool.
If you want the underground
Take whatever slot exists. The luxury of choosing a time belongs to the standard ticket; the hypogeum sells 425 places a day and, across the window we counted, had one free. A morning slot is nicer, but an afternoon slot you can actually book is better than a morning one you cannot.
The evening is not an option for the tunnels at all — the slots end before dark.
